A year in the dirt...
A year ago, I pitched a column to Jason Sheehan, Food Editor at Philadelphia Magazine, to highlight seasonal offerings at our city's farmer's markets. I wasn't sure he'd go for it, because Foobooz tends to be driven by restaurant, chef, and spirits news, but he did and it became my weekly assignment to troll the city's markets, taking to farmers, taking note of what was new what was on its way out, and reporting back. My first column told folks to seek out the last of summer favorites like peppers, tomatoes, and eggplant, as well as to hunt down fall fruits more elusive than apples like grapes and figs.
As of yesterday, The Dirt has been running every Friday on Foobooz for a full year. I have cracked jokes about Philadelphians being hungover and needing to eat more vegetables, encouraged people to respect the humble cabbage, and I've made many, many vegetable puns. For the year ahead? I guess I'll just have to dig up a few more.
